This is NOT a DIY option

If you have a 2006 Toyota RAV4 you will not be able to program this key yourself. You can program it to unlock your car's doors, but you'll need to go to a Toyota locksmith or dealership to program it. Otherwise, you'll find yourself removing the chip from your old key that's about to fall apart, supergluing it to the outside of the fob, and waiting for the red light to stop flashing before turning on the ignition. Make sure you order the correct model as some cars have multiple iterations depending on the security system fitted. My RAV4 had two key options. The blade part is marked differently for each variant. $79 for cutting and programming by a local locksmith who had the equipment. A few locksmiths couldn't cope with the job. Dealer wanted over 200€. Keep in mind that while you can

Good business. If you find someone to cut the key!

For a fraction of the cost of a dealer supplied remote key, it was good value. The only problem was finding a facility willing to carve the key without charging you more than the key is worth. Online help directing you to local locksmiths who will come out and shorten the key just isn't going to be cost effective. If I want to spend that much money, I might as well go to the dealer. A recommended major hardware store refused to cut the key down unless they sold it. The help that came with the…
