I've installed a lot of sockets and wall panels (a ton of Leviton's which I usually like and can usually screw in with a low powered screwdriver) and I've never seen anything like this crack with really very moderate hand tightening. . In the past, when I replaced a standard toggle switch with a Decora in a 2-way box, I simply swapped them both out to use a standard 2-way Decora plate. But if you're adding a dimmer, touch switch, GCFI, or any other device that requires a Decora plate, that's fine as long as you don't want to replace a toggle switch next to it.
