Great for expanding the availability of SATA ports

This add-on card is great for adding four more SATA ports. I give it one star because the maximum data throughput with the PCIe 3.0 x1 interface is 1 GB/s. Adding two SATA 3 SSDs can saturate this connection at the maximum transfer rate, which means that any additional drives added will result in a decrease in the peak performance of all drives. Theoretically, four SATA 3 SSDs would be limited to 250 MB/s each. In most cases this is probably not a problem unless you are doing very large reads…

Works great with Open Media Vault

My low power, low noise home NAS box project started with an updated ASRock J4105 Celeron quad core fanless motherboard with 8GB RAM but only dual SATA on board. III connectors. This 4 port card allowed me to fit 4 hot swappable 3.5" bays on a single card. I have configured Open Media Vault to use two 3TB Hitachi drives in a mirrored configuration and when I transfer movies from my workstation to the OVM NAS, the gigabit connection is the speed-limiting factor (maximum about 83MB/ s what is…

Old Tower RAID

I had an old ACER tower that had physical space but no motherboard slots for an SSD RAID set. I had to add some SATA power dividers and double sided tape. The adhesive tape is used to secure the SSD inside the case. It won't win any of those gamer awards for great cable management, but that's a shame. I am using software RAID and this card supports the hardware. The array is quite expensive per GB, I used 4 x 2TB SSDs, but super fast.
