Maverick uses probes which cannot be used at high heat. Works perfectly in the oven and is very accurate. However, when grilling, the probe cable is exposed to higher heat and fails. Was skeptical because of negative reviews. The thing works. pointless. Yes, if you wet the cable the readings will be accurate. Just dry the cable with a lint-free cloth, power cycle and it will work just fine. I've used it on smoked chicken, steaks, burgers, tilapia, etc. Works great! I have some kind of animal meter as a backup to confirm temperatures. But you can't lose with this Maverick.
