*WARNING* The Maxtor warranty may not be honored.

, but they were bought by Seagate in 2006 and they decided to discontinue the Maxtor line. All Maxtor-branded devices are manufactured this year or earlier, and Seagate may not warrant older devices. Before purchasing, request a serial number from the seller and visit the Seagate website to determine warranty status! Hard drives can fail instantly. If Seagate doesn't honor your warranty, you may be buying a very expensive paperweight!

Great buy for me

I bought one of these but not sure how effective it would be. I was very impressed, I use this external hard drive that I toss between my two desktops and my laptop. I mainly use it to store MP3s, I've had no problems, it was easy to install (just plug it in) and the price couldn't be better.

Affordable drive with exceptional performance

In the last 5 years I have purchased and installed 2 Western Digital drives and 3 Maxtor drives. In my personal experience, both brands are good. Pricing is very consistent for both drives and they all come with a 3 year warranty. In the future, however, I would prefer Maxtor. Maxtor drives have very good functionality and are very user-friendly, they are easy to install and come with software to help you partition and format them even if you are using them for the first time. The Ultra ATA/133

Works great - data storage

I don't know how you can get confused as to where the jumpers go. The diagram is right on the disc, and the instructions will tell you exactly where and what to do. The included MaxBlast software copied my original drive to the new one, and the new drive is now my main drive. All of this in less than 15 minutes of actual work. The rest of the time he copied all the files.

The drive works as promised but the software is buggy

I received this hard drive to replace an aging smaller hard drive. I've bought Maxtor drives in the past and used Max Blast software to transfer files to a new drive and never had a problem. This time the software seemed to be missing. Windows XP did not boot on the new drive after the replacement. I had to replace the old drive and download a third party program to do what the Max Blast software was supposed to do. Transferring system files to a new computer is an integral part of simply using

carefully! for internal hard drives

I bought this backup piece for a refurbished computer I work on. Jumper selection is mostly a trial and error process. Good luck in determining from the image where H>> you need to set jumpers to determine the master or slave device settings. Most hard drives have settings on the hard drive itself. This one doesn't! I've been playing with it for two days and still can't get the software that came with it to recognize that the hard drive is there. Take my advice and stay with Western…

Maxtor - quiet, fast and reliable

Maxtor L01P080 7200 rpm 80 GB hard drive keeps what it promises. When you take out the box and open it, you'll see clear instructions as to what purpose you're going to use it for, i.e. as a master or slave drive. It informs you about all jumper settings and guides you through the installation process. I use it as my main drive and send my Western Digital OEM to the slave position. The problem with the block, be it this plate or another, arises for many due to technical inexperience. However…
