Played with what the pros use and was amazed at the ease of zeroing. My cheaper indicator has a lot more friction in the bezel, it jumps around and never fine tunes. If you're trying to improve accuracy, you can use this tool to measure it.

I have a Mitutoyo 513-242 that is out of production but at least 25 years old. It still works great. There is no hysteresis at all. That's the most important thing for me. It's easy to read 0.00025 and I believe it. I bought a new 513-402 as a backup and left the old one on the lathe. The new one has a slightly shorter case and stylus, and the dial is easier to adjust, but otherwise the same quality. I also have Starrett Last Word, but I only use it in hard-to-reach places. Mitutoyo is my way.

I only bought this because I ultimately needed it. I haven't used it yet. This is a genuine Mitutoyo, so it will be accurate and reliable. But it didn't really pick up on the fact that it's a 0.0005-inch division display, which is a pretty rough division. Even for normal workshop work, the 0.0001 inch graduation display is convenient to make your adjustments. It will be fine for big things, but in hindsight I should have gotten a 0.0001 inch display and that would be my next purchase. it is now
