Digital micrometer (without switches)

Good accuracy and repeatability. It doesn't have an off button. It lights up during zero calibration (zero button press). It turns off over time, but I have calipers with an off button that I feel better about. It can be zeroed in any position so that the difference can be measured. This is still a good non-electronic caliper. Its range is only one inch.

Pros
  • Electromagnetic absolute encoder with increased resistance to environmental conditions such as dirt, oil and water which can lead to false readings
Cons
  • Unreliable

Top quality outside micrometer at a reasonable price

Mitsutoyo is a leader in measuring instruments and this is no exception. If you want accuracy, you can't get any better in the measurement department. It's a bit difficult to get used to as you have to apply constant torque when measuring to make sure you're accurate, but you get used to it. I've used this to measure to send accurate designs to workshops and it saved me the headache that minor errors from cheaper ones would cause.

Pros
  • Model number: 293-348-30
Cons
  • Extended range

Provenance a little unreliable

I bought 2 of these - one for use in the tech lab at work and one for home use. I'm not impressed with electronic micrometers. If you're measuring something small, the origin will zero out pretty well. But after measuring something by about an inch, half the time the origin will be off by half a tenth to a tenth. I'm not new to microns, so it's not an inept user or uncertainty about the cleanliness of carbide surfaces. They replaced a 30 year old Mitutoyo mechanical tenth mic that fell off (I…
