TACHOMETER VS. SPEEDOMETER: While a digital speedometer will read the current speed of a vehicle, this automotive tachometer is used for measuring the rpm of a revolving shaft, as with the driveshaft of an automobile. ACCURATE RPM METER: This handheld tachometer is highly accurate and noncontact. With high-speed laser-aim operation and instant readings from 2.5 to 99,999 rpm, this radar gun gives you accurate rotational speed readings from a distance. AUTOMOTIVE TACHOMETER GAUGE: This big- or small-engine tachometer measures velocity in revolutions per minute. The information is displayed on a large and easy-to-read LCD screen. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: This pocket radar device is accurate to +/- 0.05% and is capable of measuring at a distance from 2" to 20". It measures revolutions over a 1-second sampling time and stores them as the last, minimum, or maximum reading. COMPACT DIGITAL COUNTER: The compact, lightweight design of this photo tachometer makes it easy to get speed readings for diagnostic and measurement purposes. This device operates on 3 AA batteries (included).

Not bad for such a low price

Overall a good product for the low price. As others have pointed out, putting in batteries is no easy task! I didn't use cheap carbon batteries, but branded alkaline batteries. It was not easy to install them in such a way that the battery cover could be closed properly. Also noteworthy; The battery cover does not slide off as advertised until the small screw is removed. Accuracy seems reasonable, although I doubt it's as accurate as the specs say. Unfortunately, there's nothing special aboutโ€ฆ

Disappointing Quality issues Offset optics, closed beam, noise in battery compartment

I was very pleased with this tachometer. The excitement died down when I had to find a special piece to secure the battery door screw and I found that Godzilla had tightened it. Why, especially when you put the batteries in first? The battery box was designed by someone who doesn't understand tolerances. The supplied batteries did not fit! The negative spring clips were completely crushed and it was still not possible to properly install the batteries with the button on the positive terminal. I

If I hadn't had to fix that first, there would be a higher rating.

Couldn't work right out of the box. The device was still sealed so no return, but the first attempt to use it failed to read. I work in optics and immediately knew the problem was with the lens assembly as it was loose and out of place. I was able to fix it quickly and then it worked like a charm. If the original quality had been high I would have given it four stars. If you take the plunge and get a lemon too, here's how: Remove the battery cover. There are two small black screws in the holesโ€ฆ
