It has an auto shut off but it drains the batteries pretty quickly. You can turn it off to help, but I've found that even with two AAAs, it dies quickly. I thought it was a trip when we bought this mouse for our son's scaling class but seriously there is no sound from the mouse. We've had it from a few weeks to a month and there have been no problems.
