Output Battery/Alternator Tester

This inexpensive tester sits in the glove box of a 1997 Rover 416i that is driven once or twice a week or less. As with most older cars, there are electrical issues. The tester is used to check the condition of the battery and the operation of the alternator at start to detect problems with starting and charging to failure. This simple device is compact, plugs into any 12V outlet and works as advertised. Comes with instructions. No more leaving the multimeter in the car or opening the bonnet.

However, it seems to be working fine.

This tester seems to work fine; there are various indications of the state of charge of the battery. However, I found it difficult to understand the exact meaning of the indicator lights - some are blank, others are solid, and some are flashing - in a different order. The figures shown (a figure with 7 blocks explaining how to interpret the meaning of the various indicator lights) are really not very useful in practice - they are incomplete and poorly written in my opinion. Or maybe my…

Read the section on which indicators mean what!

It's a little tricky to use and easy to wire up, but you should read the section on which lights mean what as they almost conflict when illuminated by multiple lights in the same test section. If they only turn on one light per test section and turn on other lights that light up in each section separately as a new test section, it would be better and easier to use. I believe one was solid and another flashed in the same section, making it difficult to tell what was going on in this test.
