An ultra-compact computer that has it all

The D40 is an unrivaled combination with several key features:1. Very compact - fits easily in your pocket or small purse when you go out. If the camera is too big to carry around, it's useless - you won't get any pictures unless you take your camera with you2. High resolution - 4 megapixels is enough for quality 8x10 prints. If you are not a professional photographer, it has the resolution you need.3. Runs on AA batteries - this was key as Olympus was the only ultra-compact device to use AA…

Excellent photo quality - VERY slow response time

Although the photo quality of this camera is amazing, there is one annoying point in its performance that makes me doubt to buy it. There is a delay of about one to two seconds between pressing the photo button and actually taking the photo. I took the camera with me on vacation and when other people offered to take photos of my family. Explain to them NOT to move the camera for a few seconds after pressing the button so we don't all come out blurry. I'm surprised this isn't listed in the…

3 years have passed and I still love my D-40Z

Some examples can be seen in my photos in the general customer gallery. ;) I bought this camera because of its 4 MP, compact size, sliding cap to protect the lens, relatively cheap storage format (Smartmedia), AA batteries and a combination of automatic and manual modes. In all these and many other areas, he still gives me pleasure after 3 years. Last winter I spent a month in Europe doing 150-200 pixels a day with it. From skiing to dark pubs to driving a car, everything went well. An…

An amazing camera for its time; still a good buy for a cheap camera

This was my first digital camera; It's a fairly dated model, but it was one of the best in the range when it was made and in some categories it still holds its own against today's much more expensive models. The greatest strength of this camera is that it demands great photos. The automatic setting works very well. It supports ISO-400 and has less noise than many new cameras. It also takes decent flash photos. And it has a modest optical zoom. The settings are fairly easy to use and give you a…

Outstanding Compact Camera

This camera is just a fairy tale for us. We live in Bermuda, so we take a lot of nature photos - beach landscapes, foliage, macro photography of exotic flowers, etc. The colors in the photos are clear and saturated, and our shots are indistinguishable from actual shots on film. We print on the HP960c printer and use Kodak photo paper. The results are wonderful. To shoot indoors, the subject needs to be close - usually the flash can be a bit stronger with digital cameras. a little puzzling…

Great albeit dated choice

I'm a government employee but I also really wanted all the cool manual features and all. D40 fits perfectly. Yes, 4MP doesn't seem like much compared to today, but I thought when will I ever print more than 8x10? 4 MP was ideal for me, more would be a waste. As I said, all functions are available. Choose your own shutter speeds and apertures, white balance, video (yes, video-sux, but that's true for most cameras. Just like digital camcorders take bad shots. Wait a few more years and you might…

Comparison with Canon Powershot S40

1) Size. Both cameras are small, but the crown goes to Olympus, albeit by a few cubic points. Olympus is also the lighter of the two. 2) permission. Both cameras are equipped with a 4.1 megapixel CCD. What Canon lacks and Olympus has are extrapolations to 3200 x 2400 (or 7+ megapixels). By extrapolating from a raw image (not even a TIFF!), the camera can make a much smarter decision than regular Photoshop. This is required if you want to print a poster from your photo. 3) image quality. Very…
