It is uncomfortable to sit in a kayak with a backrest

This life jacket is well made and I think if you use it in a kayak or canoe without a backrest it would be great. Buy. However, I have a pedal kayak with a mesh back seat. Leaning against the seat back is very important to the proper operation of my kayak, but unfortunately the buoyancy panel on the back of this life jacket was very uncomfortable in relation to the back of my kayak seat. I immediately bought an inflatable life jacket with no backrest so I could sit comfortably in the seat of…

Generally not that bad!

Reviewed immediately after purchase, light weight, zipper feel and premium look. The stitching looks sturdy and the adjustable straps have extra length for us big guys. Pockets are a bit disappointing, not as much room as I thought, maybe a cell phone in one along with a folding knife. The other which looks like a platform can hold two maybe 3 year old Zury Mag darts 6 inch single hook set without any mess. I'm a big guy and although I unbuckle the straps and adjust them for my comfort, the…

Definitely one size!

I am 5ft 8 inches tall and weigh about 200lbs now. I feel like there's definitely room if you're taller, shorter, or taller. There is still a lot of strap left that can be used. I bought it because of the front pocket and security. Haven't used it yet for safety reasons but seems like there is enough padding to keep it afloat. In any case, the bag is perfect for my phone and other useful things. For example when it's windy and I need to tie a new lure to my line, Molly hooks are perfect for…

Also suitable for big boys

I had my doubts about this vest. Judging by other reviews, everyone paid too much attention to the plastic zipper. My only concern is will it fit? I have a 58 inch chest and had enough room. The item description says it fits for 40-60 inch bust. The vest says otherwise. (See photo) I think I had a lot more free space. (Not that I wanted to.) It even fits big boys. I weigh 325 pounds. All this weight falls on the abdomen (chest). It's not the best vest, but it doesn't cost more than $100. And…

We are happy with the vest as a work platform for surfing

Surf fishing off the Washington coast. I weigh 235-250 pounds and it has enough room for a tall person. My wife is 130 pounds and wears a one size fits all. The left front pocket is good for bait and a small but useful work platform. Right front suitable for 3x6 cases plus pliers. I use the top right pocket for ready kits and a small whistle. The top pocket has a snap-lock nylon loop for holding the top bar while you work. To the bottom 2" nylon waist straps I attached a rod holder cut from a…

Great design, but plastic zipper?!?

Seems to be a very good PFD. They say it's a Coast Guard-approved Level 3 lifejacket. According to the US Coast Guard, most people need at least 7-12 pounds of buoyancy from a buoyancy device to stay afloat. According to Onyx, the lift pressure is about 15 pounds, which is above standard for a Level 3. That's good to know. I will be using this PFD for kayaking and it will be perfect for every aspect of these adventures! I love all bags out there. I also really like the connection point with the

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Some maintenance required

I tried on at least a dozen life jackets while I was there. Only about 3 were tolerant enough to buy. But I also didn't want to spend more than $90 on a PFD since I'm just starting out in kayaking. I use my sit kayak for fishing and wanted a PFD with multiple pockets to hold some lures, pliers, safety whistles etc. That seems like the right thing to do. My local sporting goods store had other ONYX PFDs but not this model so I could check the quality of the brand. Tip: A friend advised me to get
