Description of 🐠 High-Quality Penn-Plax Clear-Free UGF Aquarium Filter – Freshwater & Saltwater Safe – Ideal for 15 to 20 Gallon Tanks

NOTHING LIKE OLD SCHOOL: The Clear-Free Premium Under Gravel Filter is air driven and utilizes an Air Pump (not included) to cycle crystal clear water throughout your aquarium, while keeping a crisp and neat look inside. This means there’s less “moving parts,” making for simplistic and easy maintenance. This filter is suitable for most 15 – 20 (high) gallon aquariums. BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL, AND PHYSICAL FILTRATION: As air is pushed through the Air Stones and rises through the Lift Tubes, water is gently suctioned through gravel and the filter plates, allowing both air and water to pass through the Filt-a-Carb Activated Carbon Cartridges. When water continues to be drawn through, anaerobic bacteria collects and colonizes within the gravel and filter plates. ALSO AERATES YOUR TANK: Since the Clear-Free Premium Under Gravel Filter is air driven through the use of Air Stones and an Air Pump (not included), it also aerates your tank. In essence, your aquarium is being filtered and aerated at the same time, though the same system! It’s a filter and bubbler in 1!. ITEMS INCLUDED: The Clear-Free Premium Under Gravel Filter includes 2 Filter Plates, 2 Adjustable Lift Tubes, 2 Straight Airline Tubes, 3 Filter Plate Connecters, and 2 Replaceable Filt-a-Carb Activated Carbon Media Cartridges. MEASUREMENTS: Each Filter Plate Separately = 11.25” (W) x 11.2” (D) / Filter Plates Together = 22.5” (W) x 11.2” (D) / Each Lift Tube at Filter Plate Base = 12” – 15”.

Upgraded for rear hanging for ease of use and efficiency.

I like that the entire substrate is used as a filter and the water column is always crystal clear. The UGF never gets clogged like the one hanging in the back. I would like a more durable plastic, but this is a great tool for keeping your aquarium thriving.

Pros
  • Acceptable

Is an important part missing? fits aquarium pumps and filters

I've finished putting the whole thing together and realized I need ONE ITEM to make it work? So now I'm trying to figure out what the instructions say. And it just sits in my tank, unplugged. I can't just wait for the new part because I had to take gravel, plants, fish, snails, deco to set it up when it's not working.

Pros
  • Regular price
Cons
  • Some little things

All the filters you need

I've been using gravel packs for years and this is really all you need. They've been around for decades and it's hard to argue with decades of fish keeping. You can combine them with a sponge filter and have an easy, perfect installation. This is a good quality under gravel pack. All my tanks run with these filters. Crystal clear water is what you get. Get one.

Pros
  • Crossing my fingers
Cons
  • I have my doubts

Excellent gravel filter

Excellent gravel filter, old filtering with bubbles, bubbles lift water from the bottom up from two backs. It works very well without the risk of small fish being sucked into a traditional water filter. I have a gravel pack (lower water) and a water filter (upper water) to help the water circulate faster. Highly recommended. I have a hexagonal tank and I cut two corners to make it fit and be perfect!

Pros
  • understandable even for the old
Cons
  • Can hurt

Terrible product from a good company

Bought one for my 20 gallon tank. It fits well but the base plastic is very flimsy, I had to use metal scissors to cut out the plastic tabs so I could use the connectors to snap them together. The transparent hoses are loose, one went in easily and the other had to be shortened a bit, but none were tight. The unit works, it's just not as good as the 10 gallon unit I had from Penn Plax.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Lots of stuff

Works great for aquarium pumps and filters

I decided after a few years my rescued goldfish feeder needed a new aquarium. I went the old fashioned route and used a rock chip filter along with a sponge filter. I ordered this for a 20 gallon aquarium measuring approximately 12x24. The combined panels were too wide and I had to cut about 1/2 inch of material to fit. My tank is custom sized so I had to make a small modification. The tank looks cleaner than ever, I don't think I'll ever go back to expensive filters. My fish have never been…

Pros
  • Fingers crossed
Cons
  • Hard to say

I have been using filters under gravel for at least 34 years. They work well for goldfish. Now I combine the primer with two filters hanging on the side. I love my fish and want them to be in the best condition. The goldfish is a priceless treasure. The saddest thing in the world is when your favorite friend, a 12-year-old goldfish, gets sick. I will always use bottom filters in my aquariums. I have wonderful stories about mean goldfish. My first goldfish learned to rub its mouth against glass…

Best Filter for the Money

The Gravel Filter is easily one of the best filters you can buy, dollar for dollar. Because they are very effective, simple, inexpensive and durable. Here are some tips on how to use this filter properly. DO NOT CLEAN THE GRAVEL. That's the most important. You shouldn't clean the gravel much at all. Yes, some brown matter will accumulate. This brown substance is not a "pile of fish". These are beneficial bacteria. If you remove these beneficial bacteria, your filter will stop working and your…
