Effective drive, BUT.

I've been using this CD for about three months and absolutely love it. I run it all day, every day, and it's never glitched in the slightest. I've used it with +R, -R, and DL media and have never burned coasters; not even. The firmware update gives me 6x write speeds on 4x DL media with no noticeable quality loss. I connect via firewire and get incredible data transfer speeds. I use it with Norton Ghost for perfect Ghost Image system backups with no issues; I use Nero for almost everything…

Great performance and beautiful drive

I bought this multi-format drive to burn home videos to DVD and back up data from my computer. Put simply, it rocks. It takes every format available and is simple and straightforward to set up. In addition, it looks good and takes up very little desktop space when installed vertically. For those of you interested in video copying like me, the looks of the capture device is only half the battle. I had to upgrade my PC from 256KB RAM to 1GB. Yes, it is 1GB RAM. Otherwise rendering will take…

writes everything round -- 6 stars

If quality is your top priority, then the Plextor is just right for you. If your time is worthless and you would like to be rewarded for a poorly designed product, then Plextor is not for you. Plextor's new AutoStrategy technology delivers the ultimate recording quality - now more than ever. Plextor really can write ANYTHING. You can buy the cheapest media, say $0.19 DVD-R, and just "donate" four discs, and the Plextor hardware (Sanyo base) combined with the Plextor firmware (Taiyo Yuden…

The DVD burner works almost 100% of the time

I'm saying almost 100% because I had 2 errors writing to the drive. Yes, it could be software, but it could also be firmware. Unlike the exact same drives tested by several others, it recognized every blank DVD I tried. I wish I could say the same about the built in NEC DVD+R that came with my Dell. It was always very picky and I eventually gave up. Then I bought a second internal model from IO Magic. It reads everything fairly well, but won't burn DVDs or even CD-Rs. That's how it was on the…

Expensive toy with limited utility

I bought this drive to use the dl function and use fewer backup drives. Any other use would be sauce. I bought Plextor for two reasons: A) I had a decent Plextor DVD drive about 15 years ago; and B) The user reported that he would write to "everything", although I doubted this was literally true. The first thing I learned was that there is a limited supply of Plextor approved DVD media. I found this out when I put the Memorex disc into the drive and the message "INCOMPATIBLE MEDIA" appeared on…
