Review on Plextor PX-716UF - Dual Layer DVDRW Drive - Hi-Speed USB/IEEE 1394 (FireWire) (PX-716UF/SW) by Adam Jacobs

I bought this drive to use the dl function and use fewer backup drives. Any other use would be sauce. I bought Plextor for two reasons: A) I had a decent Plextor DVD drive about 15 years ago; and B) The user reported that he would write to "everything", although I doubted this was literally true. The first thing I learned was that there is a limited supply of Plextor approved DVD media. I found this out when I put the Memorex disc into the drive and the message "INCOMPATIBLE MEDIA" appeared on the screen. Then I found that although Plextor included Retrospect backup software, it was not configured for this device. However, Retrospect said it could be "custom" configured for the device, and I followed the on-screen instructions to do so. The first thing that happened was that he used an expensive dl disk for this and then locked the disk. I then confidently started a full backup of my hard drives. In order not to delay this I wasted another 5dl of media and only put 1.9GB to 2.0GB on each disk. Once I realized what had happened, I called Plextor Technical Support and was told that I needed an updated version of Roxio's Easy Media Creator v. 7.5 which includes a copy of Backup My PC and this program will make good use of dl. MASS MEDIA. At the moment I can't even find any backup software that says it can use dl media, let alone that it's set up for that particular device.
