Bought 4 of these and all have the same problem. They don't hold their positions. The lift moves down very slowly with a load. Next to this bottle jack I left a smaller jack that I couldn't raise to the required height. The bottle jack rose about 1/2 inch or a little less than the smaller jack that held the 8 inch weight. I used these to increase my 50 x 16 deck. I also used 2 Big Red Jacks for the same project - especially in the middle of the deck where I used all 4 Jacks to lift more of the deck. I ended up preferring these Pro-Lift jacks as I felt they did a little more powerful work - lifting a load with minimal effort. I had no trouble lowering the load onto the prop smoothly. The one I received appears to be a newer version (made February 2016) than what is shown in the picture: On the bottom of the Jack near the dial valve has another adjustment screw (which should not be adjusted by the end user) covered by a piece of red plastic. The box on the jack says the minimum height is 7" (I've measured and verified this) and the maximum height is 13-5/8".
