update: I shot another star. After about 9 months of ownership, the docking station no longer charges the mouse. It can be turned on and off by playing with the mouse, but I couldn't find a reliable way to charge it. The cable still works as a charger, but that's clearly impractical. To be honest this is not acceptable for the price of this mouse and there are no obvious signs of damage or other reasons for this issue.
