They were broken, one of which had the wood split in half. I bought another set in a lighter color and everything was fine. The stain/finish is just average, a bit rough in places and not as pretty as regular furniture. The top and bottom are rather rough at the edges. They are very durable with the bed on top and you don't have to worry about the bed falling or falling over the risers (as is the case with plastic). So we bought these for our bed a while ago as my wife was having trouble getting out of bed due to back pain and the extra growth from that helped. We recently bought a new mattress and it was a few inches thinner than our previous mattress so we bought another set to make up the difference. This second set had some quality control issues as shown in the photo but it seems to have been mostly cosmetic so we just put it on the back. We laid two layers as instructed, with a metal rod through them
