Hot shoe EF-530 DG Hot shoe

I'm an avid photographer but for now it's just a hobby. I wanted a new flash but put my entire inventory into high end lenses so I wouldn't need a flash but sometimes you just can't do without it. So I decided to buy this flash, not Nikon, as it costs 4 times less. This flash did everything I hoped it would and was great. If it has one downside it's that it only has one tilt stop point, which isn't always the right angle I'd prefer, but I'm working around that.

As described! Great flash for $$$

I have 2 SB-900 and SB-800. While I love them all, as a full-time photographer we are all looking for ways to increase our bottom line at the end of the day. I bought one of these a while ago just to see how it works with what we're doing in the field. I have used this flash at 11 weddings. I can not complain. During the day he did what I wanted. The build quality is good. No glitz or glamour, just simple controls. I have ordered 2 more of these and am very happy with them overall. 3 of them…

Decent flash for the money

I've had this flash for a long time and it works very well. The instructions leave a lot to be desired, yes, but as a photographer you can figure it out on your own. My main issue, which may just be a defect of this particular flash, is that in the very low light I encounter at events, IR is like trying to drive with a headlight lighter at night. The flash is so weak that the camera often doesn't focus and I stand still and can't take a picture. Also the flash was good but I plan to upgrade to…

Great flash for the money

Good flash for the money, especially now that the SB-800 is out of production and the SB-900 is at least double the price. So for about the price of the SB-600 you get a flash that has almost all the features and is even more powerful than the SB-800 (as far as I can see it just lacks PC syncing, but I haven't used it it doesn't anyway). Well yeah it doesn't seem as reliable as a Nikon flash but it does everything it's supposed to. As another poster noted, you'll need to mount it to the camera…

Fairly priced

I just received this flash and did some testing. Pretty decent unit. The build quality is noticeably inferior to Nikon flashes, but the light is just as good as the SB 900. I can easily mistake the difference in build quality for a huge drop in price. The rest of the flash has worked flawlessly so far. It's too early to say how this will work in the long term. I wish there were more tilt levels in the flash head. It only has two fixed positions, but I put it between the steps and stay there…

Pros
  • Same as everything before
Cons
  • Tradeable

Features and value for money except HSS feature

Good value for money and features. Every feature I tested worked well when I limited my shutter speed to X-Sync or below. The exposure was very good, maybe a little lower. In addition to X-sync speed, high-speed sync (HSS) has become more unstable. If I tried to lock the exposure with my camera's FV function, all exposures would be more than 23 EV too low. The pre-flash at FV lock was strong, almost full, but when the shutter was fired afterwards, the actual flash was very weak, regardless of…

More flashes than I need: maybe

The only problem I have is the instructions. I'm a spotting photographer and bought it mainly because of the price. I use a Nikon D-40 and the little pop up flash wasn't enough. I was advised to use a flash when taking photos outdoors to remove shadows. Well it does. However, I have no idea about the settings and have been experimenting with the TTL setting. Indoors in a dark environment, it's amazing. You will definitely see a difference. I'm still experimenting and I believe this thing will…

Hard to beat for the money!

Let's get rid of the negativity. The instructions aren't great. You have to draw some conclusions yourself. If that's not for you then spend your money and get a blitz where lots of information is available. Well, since that's not the case, let's move on. I don't think you'll find many better flash options for the money. Of course I would like a flash; However, I am working on enhancing images with Flash. And the reality is I didn't want a $400+ "experiment" to start this process. While it took
