went well for about 4 months, then no longer shone

I had a dru-720a for about 4 months and it worked quite well until about 2 weeks ago - now with film recordings, single or DL, it either hits immediately fails or starts creeping up at 1% every hour or so sometime (newer firmware didn't help). No, I didn't call Sony support - after Google researched Sony products in general and other user experiences with the 710 and 720 in particular, I saved my time and frustration and bought the Iomega. I'm not happy with the number of (expensive) DL media…

Hard drive light stays on

After installing this drive in my case, the hard drive light was always on when the drive was in use. The drive itself seemed to work fine, but the light that was always on annoyed me, so I took it and bought a Pioneer DVR-A09XL, which works great. Also, the tray eject motor sounded very weak, like it could barely eject the tray.

Pros
  • Slim design
Cons
  • Null

The first drive worked perfectly in the test, then the CD burner died the next time it was used. Then they switched (to Sony) 2 more times for DOA discs. These days Sony spends forever replacing parts and they lost a drive which THEY took out of the carrier because it was incredibly poorly packaged) and about 2.5 months later I called to find out why they didn't have another sent a replacement hard drive. They said they had "no record of receiving the CD". I asked why they didn't verify their…

Pleasantly surprised.

I put off buying a DVD recorder until I got a (relatively) new Plextor 16x dual layer recorder at a reasonable price. However, it seems that Plextor recorders (the optical drive reference) are currently suffering from quality issues, forcing me to look elsewhere. I stumbled upon the Sony DRU720A at my local store, got a good price (not as good as the current offering here at Revain!) and took it home with me with no great expectations. Home video DVDs transferred from VHS using a DVD burner. So

The drive works well but the software that came with it has problems

I bought a Sony DRU720A last month. The first thing I did was change the bezel to black (included) to match the color of my PC. All necessary cables/screws/manuals are included. It installs fine on Win 2000 - make sure the transfer mode for the IDE connection connected to the drive is "DMA mode" as it makes a HUGE difference in CPU usage on older computers. Access is in Win 2K via Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller. I have used this…
