Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Sony DRU-720A Internal DVD+R Double Layer/DVD+RW (4X+R, 16X+RW, 8X-R): High Performance DVD Burning and Rewriting Capabilities by Rick Howlett

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The drive works well but the software that came with it has problems

I bought a Sony DRU720A last month. The first thing I did was change the bezel to black (included) to match the color of my PC. All necessary cables/screws/manuals are included. It installs fine on Win 2000 - make sure the transfer mode for the IDE connection connected to the drive is "DMA mode" as it makes a HUGE difference in CPU usage on older computers. Access is in Win 2K via Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller. I have used this drive to create and back up about 40 DVDs and CDs. DVD+R creates the drive with 16x without any problems. I also recorded a CD-R at 40x with no problems. In short, it does everything I expected it to do pretty well (although I haven't tried creating dual-layer DVDs yet). My complaint (hence 4 stars and not 5) relates to the included Nero software package. The package is a mess of utilities and it takes a while to figure out what's good for what or even works (can't get the DVD player software to work). We recommend updating to the latest version from the Ahead Software website (free). The software is powerful enough for advanced users but difficult to use for users who need simple tasks like quick backups or burning. Overall, I definitely recommend this product. Just be prepared to have a little patience with the Nero set.
