Best Portable VHF

I have been in the marine industry for over 10 years and this is the best radio I have ever used. The Standard Horizon is the only reliable radio on the water and this model is small in price and size compared to the larger models, but does everything the larger models do and is easier to transport throughout the day.

Pros
  • Expensive but decent
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

You get what you pay for - disposable electronics.

Great form factor. The battery does not charge after 24 months of light use. Effective garbage. I'll try to apply for a guarantee but previous experience tells me it's a 6 month process filled with frustration. There was one HX890 that turned itself on and once sent out a DSC alert. Woke up with two cops at my door helping NCIS track me. If you don't rely on them to save your life, they're fine. If you need a radio station you can rely on, look for one that is GMDSS compatible.

Pros
  • Looking forward to
Cons
  • Approximately

Amazing battery life

It's interesting that the smallest SH radio has the largest battery capacity, but that's the case here. It lasts at least 24 hours and sometimes 36 hours on standby (on and off), none of my other radios last as long. The user interface is a bit clunky - not as intuitive as my SH 870 - but with practice it works well. It doesn't float, but if it's important to you you can add an external life jacket - but that makes it just as bulky as any other radio, so it's not a great use case. Has all the…

Pros
  • Regular price
Cons
  • Not bad

Excellent quality: car and vehicle electronics

I have always bought ICON marine radios but on my last one the transmit button stopped working. Tried to get it fixed - the ICON store is a few miles away but it's about $100 a minute just to look at it. I also considered buying a part and trying to replace it but there was no guarantee that was the only problem and it was an old unit and the battery needed replacing - $100 more. I could get a new radio for just over €100. A comparable ICON radio is more than twice as expensive and has less…

Pros
  • Delivery was very fast
Cons
  • Crumpled
