Description of Starrett 380-12, 12-Inch Straight Steel Ruler

Precision ground and nicely finished to rigid Starrett standards. Their thickness and design permit them to retain their shape and accuracy. Unexcelled for drawing or scribing straight lines and checking surfaces for straightness. They are not beveled or graduated.

The item was damaged and could not be used.

I bought two of these. The first had a few dents and burrs so it didn't lay flat. Sent back and bought another one. The second had missing parts on the ends and dents. I sent both back as they were unusable.

Pros
  • Ideal for drawing or marking straight lines and checking surfaces for straightness
Cons
  • No instructions

protective cover? for measuring dimensions

Considering the price and the need to keep the machine's ruler in "perfect” condition, I expected a protective box or some kind of case. I made my own but didn't expect such an investment in time and materials. Came packed in a shipping crate, in air-cushioned bags; this was not to be expected with a thin instrument. Looks ok but could be bent in transit due to minimal protection. Otherwise arrived safely and quickly.

Pros
  • They are not beveled or graduated
Cons
  • Something else

Great Accuracy, Great Value

All Starrett ranges are guaranteed to be less than +/- 0.0005 inches per linear foot. That's why I use the 12" model for face and edge measurement on all woodworking machines. The steel is fully stress relieved and triple milled to ensure dimensional stability over a wide temperature range. My father's Starrett instruments are still in perfect condition, and some are over a century old. Divide that price by a hundred years to calculate true value. With tools this beautiful, proper care is…

Pros
  • Thickness and Design Maintain Shape and Accuracy
Cons
  • Crumpled Packaging
