Did exactly what I needed.

I bought a StarTech docking station to erase some old hard drives. I had both SATA and ATI drives and was able to install both types with no problem. The procedure worked great. I have 1 other old SATA drive and am considering using the docking station as a backup. Easy to set up and easy to use. I don't use it all the time but I'm glad I have it.

Pros
  • Fingers crossed
Cons
  • Great price

Works great but one caveat

The bottom line is this dock does what it says on the tin, it allows you to transfer data between SATA and IDE drives. What's not so clear from the descriptions is that you can't transfer between two SATA drives. It's just a one-to-one transfer function, one SATA drive and one IDE drive. Plus I plugged it in, installed the hard drives and off we went. simple and easy. Remember, if you're looking for SATA-to-SATA processing, then this docking station isn't for you.

Very satisfied! would recommend.

Well I've been thinking about this type of device for a while but I didn't know it existed. You see, I was one of the first home PC users, so of course I have a lot of old hard drives at home. At one point I had my old files on a backup drive, but stupidly I split the drives so I lost that data when one of them failed. Let's get to this device. It took a few tries to get the drive jumpers to work, but once they did everything worked fine. Would recommend to anyone (like me) with old hard drives

Just when you think something doesn't exist - it is!

I had every hard drive I've ever had in a box with the intention of one day putting it in a new computer so I could copy all my art and written music. Never happened until I brazenly plugged a USB drive into the docking station. Miraculously, this unit appeared first. It's funny because even though I worked in IT I never knew it existed and when I described to another techie what I wanted to do they turned up their noses and said such a beast didn't exist. It worked great with no computer…

Does what it should.

Well it does what it was designed to do. I bought it to try connecting my old bad Seagate hard drives and see if they could allow me to erase the old data. failed. However, the problem was not with the device, but with the Seagate drives! Nice design.

1 Sata interface + 1 IDE

There is nothing in the second slot from the top. Even if it looks usable in the photos. No, that is not so. Can connect 1 SATA hard drive. And an IDE hard drive. That's all. 1 each. Not sure why it should have a second slot lol. My guess is they just reused a case from another model to save money. Although for the record. This is the same slot from a great product. I'm hoping to find one that still lets me clone SATA drives, but it also includes an IDE interface. This works for a project I…

So far very happy with the performance of this docking station

Works on Linux Mint 17.2 64-bit and Asuz Z97 MK 2 motherboard Detected and copied from multiple 3.5" SATA hard drives and laptops. A laptop NTFS hard drive gave an error that Windows did not close it properly. I was able to read and copy files from that drive by mounting it read-only using the following commands in the Linux terminal: sudo mkdir /usr/mntsudo mount -r /dev/sdd2 /usr/mnt I was then able to view the contents of the drive with this command: sudo ls -l /usr/mnt After mounting the…

Works exactly as described

Works exactly as described. Meets my expectations. I was surprised by the ease of use. Windows Plug and Play, better known as Plug and Pray, installed the device with no problem. It sees the inserted drive as a flash drive, so it can be used for data storage or other functions with the appropriate drive. I'm not sure if it offers a boot disk option. I suppose it depends on your bios boot order. I haven't tried the clone or copy feature yet, but so far it works as advertised.

StarTech ships disassembled stations (amazing photo proof!)

I blame myself for paying too much for an overpriced StarTech hard drive docking station in my initial search for a reliable brand, but StarTech is responsible to send me a product that wasn't even fully assembled. As you can see from the photo, this product left the StarTech factory unported. Emails to StarTech Customer Support have made it clear that this is not uncommon. I suspect that many of the one star reviews on this product are from customers who have unknowingly received docking…
