SunGuard Charge Controller Regulator Morningstar Review

The same controller has been on our camper for many years. When it finally came out, we replaced it with this one. It worked great for 3 months and then stopped working. The battery is empty. I suspect their "weatherproof" design doesn't stand up to Montana's rather mild summers. Buy a $15 internal DC controller and ditch the magic boxes.

That's fine, but there are better options for low-power applications. I bought this plan to use it to run a remote sensor project. I noticed that this controller draws 6mA, but I didn't notice that the current is drawn even after dark when the device should be off. Good little regulator for solar systems producing less than 4.5 amps, it works well and has low self consumption. You will need to provide your own gauges/meters to see how it "works" as it has no LED indicators at all. It is also not designed for load management like many other controllers, which is not critical for my use. I've had mine for over a year now and it's just perfect for what it is. Significantly better charging than a boring on/off threshold. The temperature compensation is excellent. While not an MPPT, it will charge your batteries to their peak capacity by providing them with the correct temperature compensated voltage/amp.
