This chisel set is low quality

I wanted to hand carve a rocking horse's head but the chisel set is dull and cannot cut basswood (soft wood) without a hammer. Not worth the effort, too thick, too blunt and too cheap to build.

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product

Not bad. on wood chisels

So I wasn't expecting anything sharp, nice edges or anything like that. But after some time of grinding and smoothing I got them to be and stay sharp. Not bad metal. If they break I would buy them again. Or just save up for something better.

It may not suit you - hand tool

This set suits me perfectly. This is a very low price. The reason it might not be five for you is because the chisels need to be reversed. I use them for the inlay technique I make. The change takes a long time, but you get what you want. The steel is of good quality and the grips are comfortable.

Good product - Good price

I had to complete a complex project - Kuksa from scratch. I had never carved like this before and I liked it. I couldn't have done it without a chisel and was really impressed at how much you can spend on a set. This set was very affordable and worked really well right out of the box. I need to learn how to sharpen them but they were sharp enough to use right away!

Pros
  • Pleasant to use

  • Everything is great

Requires a lot of skill to sharpen

As others have pointed out they will need to be carefully resharpened. Getting this right requires at least a bench grinder and a set of coarse to fine whetstones, as well as a fair amount of skill. I knew this was happening but was still a little surprised at how much metal had to be removed to get the right angle. If you have the appropriate tools, you should allow at least an hour for each groove. Once properly shaped and sharpened they make a very handy chisel set.

Nice tools but need some tweaking.

These chisels are made from durable, high quality materials and come in a handsome carry/storage case. However, the angles of a single lead are inconsistent and need to be changed right out of the box to be usable. Some of these had such extreme bevel angles that the kerf had to be held almost perpendicular to the workpiece for the cutting edge to engage, which is obviously unacceptable or unusable. These are good tools when filing or sanding new bevels, but don't expect a pre-made set of bits…

Bad form, good steel.

These chisels are poorly sharpened. I'm not talking about factory bevel on the cutting edge, we all know that it needs to be corrected on all but the most expensive tools. I'm talking about everything else in the instrument. The reamer is uneven, the sides are sharpened at what appear to be random angles, and worst of all, the thickness of the tool isn't the same from side to side. None of this renders the tools unusable or, frankly, less productive. This makes sharpening an exercise in…

Mediocre at best.

I bought these to use in projects when I'm not in my workshop. I don't like taking my good tools with me anywhere. The ending is almost unacceptable. The steel is covered with abrasion marks that should have been polished. The bevels are ground so fine that the nicks cut nothing but balsa or basswood. Luckily I have all the necessary tools to sharpen and use them. I have to say the steel is decent quality and should hold an edge well. Update: I downgraded my rating by one star. When using…

They make pretty decent chisels

They come in very handy when sharpened, sharpened and sharpened to the correct bevel angle. Please watch the attached video. Before the final use, the chisel was ground and cleaned accordingly. The wood I use is pine, which means it's pretty soft. I use the chisel in and against the direction of travel. A chisel is said to be sharp if it can cut wood when you go against the grain. I'm pretty sure it would dull if used with a hammer on oak or maple. But I didn't try. For the price, however, they
