My Darwin Loves It - Food

An ideal basic food for Mediterranean tortoises that require a high-fiber, low-protein diet. That, plus a small amount of mazuri nuggets and plenty of weed, both dehydrated and fresh, and Darwin is healthy and happy. It also has a calcium chewing block for bone and carapace health and to keep its "beak" from overgrowing. He will be ten years old next month. When he was a kid I had to introduce this by adding a small amount of chopped veggies from the grocery store, which he preferred but wasn't

Best food for desert tortoises

Excellent quality food for tortoises. My 27 year old desert tortoise has only eaten organic leafy greens for years. But they were expensive and withered before she'd eaten them all and I had to throw them away. It took her a long time to fully transition to this food. I recommend mixing up some of them and putting whatever food they are eating on top. Make sure you keep it well hydrated and always provide the turtle with fresh water. She's currently hibernating, but it's great to know that I'll

Nutritious and tasty food for turtles

I recommend this food for sulcata spurred tortoises (African spurs). I have had my male Sulcata for about five years and he has been thriving on this feed. The 60 ounce size lasts a long time and is quite large. The food comes in the form of hard pellets that you soak in warm water until moist and puffy. The resulting soft and moist mix of hay and nutrients is not only extremely palatable to my own turtle, but also has very healthy ingredients and nutritional values. Zoo Med has always been a…

Great food! Makes happy, healthy turtles!

I have 2 baby turtles and wanted to add grass fiber as a main ingredient to their diet. The granules are really big and very hard, but you just need to put them in a shallow bowl and soak in a layer of water for about 20 minutes. When you return they are stretched out, fluffy and moist. Simply mash the already inflated pellets in a bowl to dry them again and you can use the pellet powder to add them to your food. I usually dice the cactus (nopales) with some squash, squash, fruit or edible…

Great food for pancake turtles

I have two pancake turtles (Merry and Pippin). For the first few years I fed her a mixture of thick leafy greens like kale, collard greens, dandelions, etc. However, I noticed that her droppings weren't always hard or frequent. The container for this food classifies pancake turtles as grassland turtles, which is why I chose this food from Zoo Med's line of turtle foods. At first I just mixed this food with her greens because I wasn't sure I could get her to move. Stop eating leaves. I also…
