Find out what the dealer knows

This little scanner is great. Not only is it a normal OBD-II, but it also has special software for Volvo and Saab vehicles, which allows you to read out all the brand-specific functions. This scanner adds the ability to read ABS codes and SRS codes, which is huge, and it reads all the electronic stuff that regular OBD-II doesn't read. You must have a little knowledge or be willing to learn because knowing the code won't really get you anywhere, but if you're willing to get your hands dirty you can diagnose a faulty sensor and replace it. In my situation, my 2013 Volvo S60 T5 had both ABS and DSTC lights on and needs a city service. The dealer asked $195 to read the code and tell me which sensor it was. After identifying the sensor, I bought a genuine Volvo ABS sensor from the dealer for $105 and installed it myself. The dealer, as I said, wanted $195 to "diagnose" (ie do what this scanner did) and then if I replaced the sensor with them, they would charge $485, charging me $195 for the diagnosis would. Given the price of this scanner (I think it was about $110 when I bought it) and the $105 sensor (could have been cheaper but I was in a hurry), I fixed the issue and disabled ABS and DSTC. Lighting. The city security light was still on but using a scanner I found codes for closure speed sensors, yaw sensors and a bunch of sensors I didn't even know existed which I believe were downstream ABS sensor codes, that were faulty. This scanner was able to clear these codes and now the City Safety Light has been fixed. I've also found a bunch of codes for all types of taillights and doors that I know dated from when my rear window was replaced with a glass seat and when the Volvo dealer replaced the door operators - and these codes might help me when reselling cost $$. So if you do some of your work, this is a good tool.
