It must have been in the early 2000's when Elton Brown recommended the Microplane Zester on an episode of Good Eats. At the time I was struggling to find the perfect parmesan grinder/grater and within days of the show airing I was on the hunt for a micro plan. Turns out that particular micro-grater isn't very good for cheese, but it's served me well for grating citrus peel, cinnamon, chocolate, ginger, and nutmeg for the past 10+ years. My family loves plenty of freshly grated nutmeg in soups, mashed potatoes, Tunnbrödsrulle and cheese fondue. After regularly scraping the nutmeg, my first microplan eventually grew boring. Nothing is worse and more dangerous than a dull blade. The more strength you need, the less control you have and the more likely you are to slip and injure yourself. I received my new microplane on time and 10 years later the product looks exactly like the first one, even the graphics on its plastic case are very similar. I took the old one down to the basement for light woodwork. happy happy!
