80% Good Solution - Slide & Negative Scanner

I bought this scanner to convert my 5,000 or so 35mm photos and slides into digital images and although I was perfectly ready, a lot more I'm glad I didn't do this. . The reason for this is that every higher quality film scanner I've found is much, much slower - I could never scan 5,000 frames in more than a minute at a time. I pay to have a few dozen of my photos digitized to a quality that this device can't match, but that's only for the very best of my photos. It's small, simple and fast. The slowest part of the whole process is getting my negatives out of their storage cases to be scanned and then putting them back in. It's basically a 5 megapixel digital camera with a macro lens and a miniature light table. The best you can hope for is an image quality of 5MP - good enough for most snaps, but not good enough for your very best "I have to frame that" photos. But honestly, only a very small part of a person's photo collection is good enough to matter, so paying someone else to take those few special shots is inexpensive. Wait a few seconds after you've positioned each film or slide image - the auto exposure will take a few seconds to adjust if the new image is very different from what it was before it was scanned. You can observe this on the LCD screen. So when the image stops changing, it's time to press the button. Make sure to clean the negatives thoroughly before scanning them or you'll end up with nice, crisp images of dust and fingerprints! Finally, and perhaps most importantly, if you're not willing to perform basic image corrections, you probably won't be happy with your results. All of my color scans had a noticeable bluish cast that's easy to fix if you have the tool and patience. After some experimentation, I found a single set of fixes that makes all my scans look good. This is only required for color images; Black and white comes out, well, black and white (and grey). I use GIMP which is free but there are many other applications that will do the job. All in all, this is an easy-to-use product that basically does what it says on the tin, except that the color grading is a bit off. I'm glad I bought it, but if I hadn't been willing to tweak it a bit I would have been a lot less happy.
