I'm in my 50's and looking for a shoe with a soft, pliable midsole for running and everyday wear on hard surfaces. I had previously purchased Asics Gel Nimbus running shoes up to 20. The 21 seemed to drop the cushioning from soft to firm so I decided to try the Brooks and they didn't disappoint. I liked the Brooks sneakers because they clearly communicate the purpose they design and manufacture the shoes for and they totally nailed it! The Glycerin 17 shoes have a soft midsole that really absorbs shock. When standing in one spot and shifting my weight between my feet, I estimate that I can feel about 1-2mm of midsole deflection in the heel area. If you experience back or knee pain when walking on hard surfaces, then these shoes are for you. I put my review on hold on purpose to see if they fade over time. So far they have retained their soft cushioning. By using a combination of EVA and rubber, we hope the midsole will retain its soft cushioning for at least a year. They ultimately fail with too much energy return and not a soft enough midsole for those specifically looking for soft cushioning. These shoes don't have enough energy return for competitive runners, probably their energize line would be better suited for that purpose. On the other hand, this shoe is ideal for hard floor training and everyday wear for those who require a high level of cushioning due to injury, age and/or weight. I also bought them for my wife who has a sore leg and she loves them. Thank you Brooks for understanding the purpose of each shoe you design and for your commitment not to compromise that purpose.
