Stripping the wire ends is necessary if these wires are to be live connected. As a newbie to working with electrical circuits, I was surprised at how difficult it is to strip insulation from the end of a wire without damaging the wire itself. The Dowell wire stripper makes the job a lot easier. However, using them effectively also requires a pair of pliers to pry and remove the cut insulation from the end of the cable. I use needle nose pliers which are probably best for this purpose.
