It was just what I needed to install a new French window in my living room. 1-3/8" "Thick, 30" wide doors with glass, center panel made of glass. As another reviewer noted, the black metal cover around the ball housing and spring housing is removable. The rest of this section is aimed primarily at those looking to do this on a bare frame that didn't have a ball-lock installed previously. I used a 13/16" spade bit to drill the hole from the top. A 7/8" bit can work with metal trims on the body, as another reviewer replied. I didn't center the hole in the middle of the door when I installed it because the latch that came with the kit was much shorter than the width of my door frame. Relocating the ball latch in the door allowed me to keep the end of the panel as close to the edge of the frame as possible and maintain the same door gap across the entire frame. plate on the door frame, I first mounted the ball spring to the door, then opened and closed it several times using a 1/8" spacer between the door and the molding in the center of the door frame. This allowed me to see where to go the ball flew and where it stopped. This may vary depending on the material of the door frame. My door frame was white painted oak. (Please don't scold me for painting the oak white. That's a long story.) After I made the With the latches aligned, I marked two screw holes and countersunk them so the panel could sit flush. To account for the center of the panel, I used a regular 3/4" drill bit to remove just enough wood in the frame , so that the plate sits flush. the clearance you have in the door frame. I allowed the standard 1/8" on top of my doors when I installed them. When I proceeded to install the latch, the lip around the body was about 1/16" high and the extended ball was about 3/32 I understand that the panel has a curved edge to push the ball down, but I thought it would be too tight. For that reason, I cut off another 1/16 inch from the top of the doors to accommodate that To make travel easier. If I knew about this, I could lower my doors 1/16". All in all it was a great price. My local hardware store had a limited selection and they were expensive. This was the final touch for my door project.
