These are very large (almost weird) thick hard plastic pegs. They are ONLY useful when placing something in loose beach sand and are NOT suitable for use in all conditions as stated in the description. If you want to use in loose soil you can, but they are so thick that for any other use it would be almost impossible to even break through the soil without a lot of work and sweat. I wanted to return them but they cost almost as much as I bought them (for shipping) so I just had to throw them away. If you need mixed soil/sand (for camping) stakes, just use REI.
