Both my kids love this blanket. It shines very well. You just need to make sure he gets good direct light for at least 15-30 minutes if you want it to last until he falls asleep. We "recharge" it, as my son says, every night while we get ready for bed. He's so soft too. I washed it and found no problems. I let it air dry for the most part, then threw it in a low heat dryer to finish. You don't have to do this, but I just have a feeling it's no big deal and might help keep the shine! It's worth it. Difficult to get a good picture in the dark, but all the yellow parts on it glow so you can see the images inside, including the stars.
