A few years ago I had to give up oil painting so I switched to acrylic which is equally unsatisfactory. As an alternative, I have opted for water-based oils. Wow. Why have I waited so long! While not exactly oil, the consistency of paint leaving the brush is soooo much better than acrylic - I have a lot more control with these paints. They also dry slower than acrylics, so they blend colors better on the canvas. The paint is a bit thicker than oil paint, so I recommend buying one of the mediums specifically designed for this type of paint. This set has an incredible range of colors and mixes well with acrylic paints. The number of colors combined with the price make this set a great find for those who don't already have a medium binding but want to try the 12+ colors found in other (more expensive) starter sets. One star for two reasons. First, the cap on one of the tubes broke easily, and the paint in that tube dried up and became unusable. Lucky for me it's burnt sienna, which I rarely use. I hope this is the only such tube. The second is picky. The color names are in a dot or two that my old eyes can't read. The color box at the top of the tube isn't clear enough to know what color I'm getting. When the color has run out, you can determine its color simply by removing the cap. One problem is that natural bristle brushes wash off the paint easily, but synthetic bristle brushes stain.
