Our finches love these nests. We put in small cotton balls, dryer lint and/or shredded paper (not newspaper). They have a lot of fun building and stuffing their nests, sometimes all you see is a little red beak or two. Males do indeed build nests and do not need assistance to build nests properly. The females need a little help, so we throw in some cotton balls and fluff, and then they're perfectly happy. Our males and females are in separate cages. When it comes time to let them breed and we assemble the cages these nests look amazing. They can (and we've seen) have five babies in these tiny nests, and they don't leave the nest until they are fully grown finches. I'm always amazed when I see 5 or 6 finches flying out of the same nest. These are small nesters and finches like them. They just don't like bamboo nests, and that seems to be all that many pet stores have to offer. In Revain we all get our fink nests.
