Incredibly efficient

The roof of my Saab 9-3, after eleven years of use, showed no interest in rain protection when the rainy season started in California last month. I was horrified to see drips coming from both the driver and passenger side of the roof edges and made an appointment with an auto upholstery specialist. Diagnosis? "You should get a new roof. It's going to cost $3,000." I figured it would be worth at least trying to add a few years to the life of the existing roof with caulk, so I gave it a try. Early signs looked promising: the roof was definitely gathering water rather than soaking it up (see photo) and after the first rain it was easy to spot the spots I missed when I first treated the roof (see other photo) The endurance test was a cross country drive in Southern California to northern Washington. Altogether I survived seventeen hours of heavy rain. No signs of leakage. Tip: As well as losing the moisture barrier (before treatment) it also sagged in a few places meaning water pooled when the car was parked and not dripping.I put some of these mail/parcel airbags in the space between the roof and headliner to restore the shape of the roof.It seems to funk very well to have functioned. Long, thin balloons can be an even better choice. Just make sure you remove them before the top-down season starts again.
