I'm new to sharpening but need a good set of stones first. This is a good set with a full selection of grains. I think a good set of stones is important, but getting some practice and experience on how to use them properly is probably more important. They have proven themselves on all types of cutlery in all states of initial sharpness - kitchen knives, hunting knives, pocket knives, scissors. I'm still debating which grit combinations to start with and when and how to move on to the best stone. The base is good and solid. There is a rubber pad to keep the stone in place, but I personally found this a bit uncomfortable and not that necessary. The corner lead seemed like a good idea, especially for a beginner like me. In the end I didn't find it very helpful. Partly because it fits different types/sizes of knives/blades differently, and also because the angle of each knife is different. I've also learned that the consistency of the angle is more important than the angle itself. I've found that the best way to do it is to watch some experts on YouTube for advice and then just dive in and start sharpening!
