I don't know where I read about it, but after ten years of cleaning the disgusting hermit crab cage with gravel and crab dung, I read about coir. It's a fantastic material: it eliminates odors and when you clean the cage it becomes much less uncomfortable. In addition, a pack of this garbage with water swells many times its original size. I watered the whole pack and then scooped most of it into four ziplocks, frozen them and used them every time I cleaned the cage. It's fantastic stuff, and Crabbie, our 12-year-old hermit crab, loves it: he stuffs coconuts into shells and buries himself in them every day.
