Review on The Panasonic DMR-EZ475VK: Ultimate Progressive Scan DVD Recorder & More! by Jim Young

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I have loved this model for many years.

I originally bought the same model (actually an EZ47V) from Circuit City when it came out circa 2007. I might not have liked their quirks at first, but we became firm partners as I learned to live with them, especially with being patient while booting, waiting for the disc tray to open, etc. I bought it back a few times and sold it due to moving or other circumstances. My favorite car has never been to blame. This is at least the third time I have bought it, which is the EZ475V. I still like it, mainly for recording movies I first recorded on my cable provider's DVR, which you can do if it's not copyrighted and your DVR has RCA component (red-yellow-black) outputs . I've learned to use only Verbatim discs and the disc almost never fails. When you buy dual-layer discs, you get 1:55 recording time at the highest recording quality. Good for movies. But this recorder also has "flexible recording", where the unit crams an even longer movie with "highest recording quality", consuming the disc but recording the entire movie. It also upscales any DVD to higher playback quality, which was an added treat. Update: It's 2021 now and I've just been going through some of my old Revain reviews and think I'll update these. The same machine I bought used in 2014 still runs perfectly with its old features I still work with without any problems. Verbatim dual layer discs, like all others, began to fail after a few years when they were no longer made in the Philippines. but I then (many years ago) managed to get Filipino ones on Ebay, which I've had enough of so far and they still work. It's now 2021, maybe there are reinvented brands that won't be a problem anymore. But I won't know until I buy it. Otherwise this machine will be VERY picky about which drive you use.

Pros
  • Basic HDMI connection (HDMI version 1.3) - DivX playback
Cons
  • boring packaging
