I strongly recommend anyone purchasing this starter for a Kohler Courage engine to have the valves adjusted before using this or any new one built in starter. Why? because if the exhaust valve is not in the right gap, the decompression cannot reduce the compression and allow the starter to crank the engine as intended. I just replaced the starter, solenoid and some wires which actually melted due to the overload. Check valve clearance. 0.004 inch at top dead center of compression stroke. God bless. While you're at it, clean the silicone grime off the head and valve covers and install the cork valve cover gaskets. Make a stencil on your scanner, use red permatex on the valve cover, nothing on the machined surface of the head. This way the seals can be reused for future valve adjustments.
