Its width is approximately 3 inches empty and 8 inches full. Pretty cool. It won't stand upright or on the edges - too wobbly. So lay it horizontally on the flat side. The spring works perfectly. The plastic seems very durable. When folded, it is very useful for saving space. Also, 2 gallons of water is about 16 pounds, so those with slightly less strength or hand/arm/shoulder issues can probably carry it. I know, I know, you could just fill a 5 gallon container 40% full for the same weight. But once again I would like to highlight the great space saving of this container. Finally, the handle is thick and durable. Unfortunately one more thing - there are small holes in three corners if you want to hang it up.
