I'm an artist so I'm looking at these pens from my point of view and from the point of view of someone who might just want to use pens for coloring. Caran D'Ache (all professional lines) for Polychromos, Prismacolor, Lyra, Derwent (Pro and Artist Grade), Art N Fly, Spectrum, Cezanne, Soho, Soucolor, Brutfuner and many other brands, as well as students. Pencils are included in a set of large paper coloring pages. The pencils themselves are in a hinged metal box with thin plastic shells. BOXI never leaves my colored pencils in the box. This is too cumbersome for me, since I paint a lot while sitting on chairs or on small tables where there is no space for boxes scattered everywhere. I carry my pens in cases that have multiple compartments that close with zippers and have stretchy slots for individual pens. That way it's easy to hold it on my lap and flip through to find the colors I want. This box is ok but honestly I don't think it will make it any easier to use. I offer a small case with sides as I described. You will use more pens than in the box. The shells are too thin to be used much. COLORS The colors themselves are light and well pigmented. There's a good range to choose from, including some earthy colors. However, there are not many earthy colors in this set. So if you have an aversion to lots of bright colors, this might not be for you. QUALITY The quality of these pens is really good. I'd say if you're the kind of person who likes lots of layers, these will suit you with a light touch and a controlled amount of layers to prevent saturation too quickly. If you like intense colors from the start, they will come into their own on the right paper. They're creamy and have full coverage with fewer streaks than many brands. COMPARISON I would say they are on par with Holbein, Prismacolor and Brutfuner. They are also similar to SCHPIRERR FARBEN, a popular mid-range brand. Hobby level project. I also wouldn't mind using a few colors for accents or to add dimension to the more expensive drawings I plan to make. If you enjoy painting or maybe just learning art, I suggest you start with this pencil level. It's better to learn to work with something that performs great than to struggle with poor performance and either get frustrated and quit or have to relearn how to use professional color. RESULT This is an excellent set. I love the cards that come with it (as does my daughter who seems to have covered them with paper for the time being) which is a great way to paint without a thought and get beautiful results. Pencils have excellent properties: from ordinary coloring books to artists. MY RATING FIVE STARS. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I like her. I can use it to make greeting cards and other things I need for my work, but I don't want to use my very expensive pens for that. I'm working on, but it's kind of gone. Living in a home of creative people has its pros and cons. If I find it I'll try to post it in the future.
