Unlike many steps, the treads on this step are narrower than the standing platform itself. This is an unstable design. As I was reaching for the shelf today, that step flew out from under my feet and almost broke my leg! Luckily I'm still a young man. If it had been my mother, it could have been a lot worse. I wouldn't care about a foldable design, but stability is important to me! Also, you have to keep in mind that this is not a very wide stride, which also makes it less stable. I've never had a chair fly out from under me. If you're not 100% alert every time you step straight into the middle, it's a risky decision.
