Not what I expected from a Hyde tool

I restored vintage yachts when I was in college. Hyde scrapers, spatulas and blades were important in this work. Some of them are still with me 40 years later. They were more expensive than other brands, but they were durable and reliable. No longer. The brass cap on the handle is made to be hit with a hammer. Sometimes such a blade is needed to separate glued joints or laminates. The reason Hyde's tool was up to the job is because the blade ran the full length of the handle internally with copper rivets to hold it together. Apparently a marketing genius decided to make cheaper versions of this family of tools under the Hyde brand. This destroys the value of this brand. As you can see in the photo I hit this scraper blade with a hammer and the blade obviously didn't hit the brass cap. The result is predictable. I can't tell you how much I despise people who ruin great American goods to squander their good names and make fire supplies for American families in the process.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • No power
