There are a variety of air intakes on the market for most vehicles. When I bought my new Nissan Xterra Pro-4x, I knew that if I was going to buy an air intake for "fuel economy" and performance purposes, I could buy it ahead of time, so I installed it after about driving it 3,000 miles. , usually immediately after the first burglary. K&N is a company that designs its products as an OEM but actually improves performance. First of all, an air intake does not turn a car into a racing car or a completely different animal. Some turbocharged or supercharged cars may get some benefit from it, but most North American cars will see modest benefits. Just give it a try and expect modest results and you won't be disappointed. This particular K&N move was well thought out. I wanted plastic tubing to avoid the heat absorption issues that metal tubing can have, which is important in Arizona. The filter element on it is huge, I have installed air intakes on many cars but never one on a truck chassis. It was as big as my head. In the end, these things pay off. I've seen 1-2mpg improvements and over the life of the car it pays off not having to change the filter. And at the same time, when you step on him, you grumble a little more and, of course, bark more. These things sound mean. I am always asked what engine my Xterra has when someone is in the car and I drive onto the freeway. If you've never had an intake with a lifetime filter, you need to be aware that you'll need to clean and re-lube the filter media every 1-2 oil changes, depending on conditions. That's a bit of an art, because you have to clean it in the sink, let it dry, and then moderately oil it. Leave the oil on and dry a little, then install. Putting in too much oil will definitely give you a CEL engine code. Not enough and the filter will not do its job. The downside is that your car breaks down in the process. I would recommend doing this over the weekend so you can give it the downtime it needs, or better yet with an extra filter so you can cycle it back and forth. In time I will buy another filter for this reason alone. Additionally, "dry" filters are now available, but living in an arid climate I doubt they can properly filter all the dust that gets into our filters in the Southwest. I trust the K&N brand and their filter material has never failed me or anyone I know.
