I bought a Jaras tape recorder to use for singing lessons. The cassette player works perfectly, but the built-in microphone is COMPLETELY inadequate and produces very little sound, even when the microphone is held close to the voice and played at full volume. I then ordered a Sony ECM-CS3 lavalier microphone, which is compatible with a standard voice recorder microphone jack and picks up the sound perfectly. However, I didn't have to pay the extra $20 to get the mic working. Otherwise it's a great little box. The sound quality on the radio is great the reception is good, the device records well on tape from the radio. I have not tested playability with older tapes. Those who use the radio and cassette functions will probably be pleased. If you want a good voice recorder, you'd better buy a digital device.
