Back when disc and even linear brakes weren't common, cantilever brakes were the norm on mountain bikes. I started wearing Eagle Claw shoes in the 90's; then a simple black connection. They were and are great. Easy to put on, just like canti shoes, and the fin on the back does the dual role of sweeping wet material off the rim and creating toe for the contact patch. On the recommendation of my LBS, this time I tried a double mix with black and salmon. Installation was as easy as ever and they are holding up great. Haven't used them in wet and muddy conditions yet so I'm not sure how much salmon composition will make a difference next time I go on a muddy ride. I should add that I was very close to upgrading this bike to the linear brakes but I decided to clean the rims and put on the new KS shoes instead and I'm happy. This bike is more suited to trail and touring riding; and the cantilevers provide sufficient stopping power. For hard mountain rides I would go for a linear connection; probably with kool stop pads on those brakes.
