Engine almost broke

I sealed the oil pan on my 2000 4Runner and the excess that was squeezed into the pan turned into cottage cheese similar to cottage cheese which was sticking my oil intake filter by 95+%. I'm really amazed that I didn't get an oil pressure light (and ruined bearings) as a result. The only reason I found this was because I had to re-pull the oil pan within a hundred miles of driving to fix an unrelated oil pump leak. It took me about two hours to clean the screen. The butter was spoiled too; there were tiny globs of sealant in there. Thank goodness I'm using a good quality Mobil 1 filter or the engine would fry. I just replaced the oil pump just to be careful. I have used many other Permatex sealants over the years and have always been nothing but satisfied. I'm a longtime mechanic, I haven't overfilled, I haven't added oil two days after putting the parts together (well past the advertised curing time), and I've never seen FIPG behave like this. Use caution, and if you choose to do so, apply an EXTREMELY thin bead so the chance of over-squeezing is absolutely minimal.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • Speed of work
